I know the answer to this question is probably obvious. However, I am going to ask it anyway. I am making a 5 wt 9' 3 pc fly rod for a client that he is giving as a Christmas gift. In cleaning the butt end of the blank prior to testing, I noticed 2 cracks starting on the end of the butt and running about 1/2" up the blank. Of course I abanded the blank for another blank of higher quality in my stock because of the schedule. My question, can this blank be salvaged or should I simply return it? Re: Rod Blank Butt Splits

It will be of little consequence. Just inner sleeve the area from the butt and up past the break by another 1/2 inch. Use thin wall material, graphite or glass and all will be well.

What you mentioned is not that uncommon,. This can befound in older rods that are being redone. Go with Tom K's suggestion
