a couple of years ago i built a 5' one piece fly rod from a lamiglas ultra light fiber glass
spinning blank. the rod was fine for small streams as long as casts are under 25 feet or so. the only problem with this rod was the 5' length. yesterday i converted it to a two piece with a spigot ferrul. the converstion worked great and did not noticeably change the rods
fishability. i used a section of scrap fiberglass blank. i very carefully cut and measured, fit and re fit untiil i had it right. the spigot is two inches long. both sections are the same length and it looks like it came from lamiglas that way. nice when major surgery goes well.
now i have a new skill in my rod building skill set.

Good luck, I hope it works out well. I plan on sitting in on Ralph's making a ferrule semnar in Charlotte as I'd like to experiment with 50# 2-piece & 3-piece blanks for travel rods.

big difference in the stresses involved in a 50# rod as compared to a 4wt fly rod. some double building would be needed i would think. let us know what you learn.

I know, but I'll have practice blanks I test on before cutting up a $160 GUSA blank. Would be cool if I was able to do it - they can make them 2-piece from the factory, so I should be able to figure somethign out. Wheter I have the onions to do it is another story, lol.

on a big rod that has to take a lot of stress i wonder if it could be built with both a spigot and an oversleave. kind of a "belt and suspenders" solution.
