I wanted to ask how to put the reel seat on casting and spinning blanks. I have built a fly rod rod for my first rod, but now I'm building a cast and spin as my next two. The blanks are Loomis' from Mud Hole, a CB 845 and a DS 820 but I don't know how exactly I should make the handles and reel seats. Do I need to use spacer underneath the reel seats? i wanted to put a regular handle on the CB845 and a split handle on the DS820. Any hrlp eould be appreciated! Chris,
You really need to arm yourself with a good rod building book or DVD. These are among the most basic of questions and you should gain a bit more knowledge before you proceed. Yes, you need to shim the space between the reel seat and rod blank. The reel seat should fit your hand comfortably and that means it will usually be somewhat larger in diameter than the rod blank. Common methods to shim the space are masking tape, drywall tape, cork, cord, string, thread, brick/foam and polyurethane foam bushings. ............................
