This is the first rod I have done that has under wraps and I am guessing that I will need to epoxy them before I start wrapping the guides. Is that correct?

Not necessarily. You don't 'have' to coat them before although I almost always coat each individual wrap layer as it is completed. By doing so I'm absolutely sure I get full penetration as well as a level finish when done. You really can do it either way.

Tom,
I think there are mixed feelings about that. I know some builders don't put a coat of finish on before wrapping and never have a problem. I always put a coat of finish before wrapping the guides strickly for peace of mind but that's just the way I do it. Others will tell you that it's not required which is fine too. I think either way is OK. Randy. Re: Underwraps

A coat of finish is not something that has to be done, but I find the "over wrap" of thread is much easier to do with a coat of finish on the under wrap. Re: Underwraps

"A" under and "D" over makes life simple. Re: Underwraps

Do a test wrap. The new "lite" finishes will have no problem penetrating the thread down to the blank through 3-4 layers of thread.

I have built a few surf rods with underwraps and in an attempt to limit the bulk and weight I just used color perserver on the underwraps instead of expoy. Size "A" thread for the underwraps and size "D" for the guides, the size D wraped on without problems or spaces. The color perserver acts as an excellent adhesive.
