Hello
I just used two bands of 1" strips of fibre drywall tape for my reel seat arbor. I wrapped the tape on the blank with approx a 1" space between. I applied U40 rod bond to the tape and also on the ends of the tape. I didn't see the point of applying to the space between the arbors because the blank doesn't contact there. Am I correct in this thinking or should I have applied enough between to make contact.? It is a nice fit. Not too tight or loose. Also, does this glue work its way between the fibres to the blank because I only applied on top and on the ends of the arbor to seal it off? Is this enough rod bond to hold the seat? Or should I have worked the glue in as I wrapped. How can you tell this is my first rod? Thanks Re: Did I do this right?

You're on the right track. If you push and pack the RodBond, it will tend to work its work down into the open grid of the tape. You should be fine. There is no need to fill the space between the bushings with epoxy.

Randy,
I use the mesh dry wall tape also. What I do is cut off a good length and wrap it on the blank where the reel seat would go. I usually make the arbor big so that I can cut it till I get the right fit by testing with the reel seat. After I get the lengths I need I wrap about a quarter of the length and apply some rod bond. I do this till the end that way I know the rod bond is contacting the blank. Better to know it has than hope it has. Steve Re: Did I do this right?

Ditto what they said, I had an aluminum reel seat crack loose and spin on the blank after a couple months hard use. (not so much big fish as savage jerks removing lures from trees.) Now I apply epoxy as I wrap the fiberglass tape and leave space at the ends of the reel seat which I later fill with epoxy by standing it up, fill, let it dry, turn upside down , fill, let it dry. I was using a rod built the second way for a while with no problems. too, cause I really dug the rod that has the bad reel seat. Oh well. Edited 1 time(s). Dont forget to make a water break free surface on both the rod and the seat for the epoxie to adhere to Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Did I do this right?

Good Point, Fred! Won't make much difference how much you pack in if you don't have a water break free surface for a good bond.
Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
