Crosswraps as underwraps on guides? Any advice

I have seen a few pictures before mostly on heavey saltwater rods. How is this done? I have a few ideas, but I would end up with 4 layers of thread and it seems like thats going to get way to heavy. Does any one have any pictures?

I have a couple of rods wrapped in such a manner, with a fancy wrap for an underwrap. Wrap a short fancy wrap centered where the guide is going to go, apply two tiedown wraps to hold this short wrap in place, and this is where the feet of the guide are going to rest leaving the center portion exposed - a close measurement of the space between the guide feet is important. These two areas of thread that hold the fancy wrap down become the "underwrap" where the guide rest. Place guide and wrap and finish in the usual manner. One of the "lite" finishes should have no problem penetrating 4-5 layers of thread if done expeditiously after mixing when the finish is at its thinnest.

The rods/reels I am referring to weigh 4lbs 15oz, almost five pounds. They are 30lb class trolling rods. A few extra grams of thread/finish make little difference.

Thanks that sounds good, Is it ok for there to be 3 to 4 layers of thread between the guide feet and the blank? I was thinking of doing this on a 50 class stand up blank. All said and done with the reel it will weight about 4lbs.

If you do a search in the photos under my name, you'll find a pic of an All American roller guide under which I did a chevron. Too keep the wrap skinny, I use only A or 00 size thread for the underwrap and second and third wraps and coat each layer with finish.

The Fish under the guide was on a GUSA 705 rated like 3/4-2oz. Blank weight was about 2.25oz. Guide is an LNSG16. Thread + epoxy doesn't weigh that much at all, especially towards the bottom of a rod.

Very nice, On heavy saltwater rods when using roller guides do most people just do a crosswrap underwrap on the first guide or on all the guides? It look like there might be enough room to do it on all the guides

By all means, do it on all the guides if you can. Work with size A, and coat the under"wraps" with finish before mounting the guides...."do most people...on the first guide?". who cares what "most people" do, the added weight of thread won't matter on those massive rods.
