Date: November 06, 2005 08:46PM If you could buy just one chuck for the Jet Mini Lathe which would get? I want to be able to use square stock, round stock and also mandrels down to 1/4". I have a PSI 3-jaw that I sometimes have a hard time getting tight. My son wants to begin turning and I hesitate to have him use that chuck with the jaws that stick out so far. I can just see him getting his knuckles in the way. There are so many available ,that I am getting confused with deciding on an appropriate chuck for that lathe. Any and all suggestions are welcome. This will be a Christmas present from my wife. Thanks, Herb Knowlton Re: Which lathe chuck?

Scroll chucks do not tighten as securely as threaded chucks. My choice is the OneWay Talon. It's expensive.
PSI has a new chuck series which I believe is called the Barracuda. Looks to be pretty decent. It's less than $100 and can be had in either scroll or screw type design. The one disadvantage of the screw type is that it's a bit longer and therefore eats up a couple inches more of your available bed length (distance between centers). ............ I have a Nova Precision Midi Chuck and do not hesitate to recommend it. It will hold Andy's 1/4" mandrel just fine. There are a variety of jaws available for it and I would venture that it's a lot better made than the PSI. I have one of those little PSI 3-jaw chucks and it was money wasted. The run-out with it is very bad and it won't hold a 308 Winchester casing tight enough to not spin when I drill out the primer end. The Nova holds the casings securely and has no run-out. Gerry,
I concur, very nice chuck. I bought a PSI Turnmaster Pro and love it with the Nova Midi Chuck. Only problem is I didn't buy the base extension, and I'm thinking I'm gonna have a little trouble drilling out a longer handle. I'll have to get the extension soon. Bill in WV Re: Which lathe chuck?

I have the Barracuda from PSI. It comes with a good variety of jaws for the money but the quality isn't the best. The nova precision midi can be had here for $98.99 or the supernova 2 for $169.00.
[www.woodchipshome.com] I do hear that the oneway talon is the best for holding wood tightly without the jaws digging in too much. Tony Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
