Depends on the length and rod weight ........ Most of the lighter weight fly rods I build now I use just one . Most over 5 or 6 wt , and for salt water use I use 2 . My $.02 JHD

There is only ONE stripping guide on a fly rod ~~~ the first one! All the rest are running guides. Just like you can't have two butt guides on a spinning rod you can't have two stripping guides on a fly rod.

Technically it's correct that fly rods only have one stripping guide. But I think he means those guides used that are ceramic. Many companies just try to cut costs a bit by only using one ceramic guide, but fishermen expect to see at least two of them on heavier rods. Many custom rod builders use ceramics all the way up the rod.

Because the butt of the rod is where any real applied pressure comes from, the guides there will take the brunt of the force. If you aren't using ceramics all the way out, you might at least want to consider using them on the first two guides. This is less of a concern on very light line fly rods, of course, since not much pressure can be applied to begin with.
