This is an equipment problem but since the PSI rep and I were not communicating well, I thought I would post it here for some insight.
I was rounding some 2 inch stopper blanks since my handle was finished. I was using a robert sorby steb center in the headstock when on the 4th blank the headstock started making noise like a bearing going out. A clanking rolling metallic sound. I stopped changed speeds and the noise changed with speed . I called PSI and the first suggestion was belt slap--I know belt slap and this is not belt slap the belt was too tight. The motor does not make the noise by itself so it is in the headstock. PSI insisted that one of the allen sets in the pulleys was loose--no way both were well in and could not be touching the belt. Besides there is no place for the set screws to touch anything. The noise was consistant in the same location when rotating the headstock by hand using the Chrome hand wheel. The noise was there when I changed to a MOrse taper pen mandrel and removed the steb center. It seemed like I could feel the noise when I placed my hand on the headstock. Any way I unscrewed the chrome hand wheel (i guess you call it on the headstock) and screwed it back on and the noise dropped off completely. PSI said there was a keeper ring between the chrome wheel and the bearings but I see no keeper unless I do not know what I am looking at. I do not know how the headstock comes apart so is it possible for the live center to push out the headstock spindle just a little and cause the noise. When I screwed the chrome wheel back on I reseated the bearings???? Any thoughts on this. ?? The lathe is under warranty but unless I know what the problem is I will not get any satisfaction or solution from PSI. Thanks a lot. john Kepka Re: lathe headstock noise--turncrafter pro
