removal of old varnish

I'm rebuilding a bamboo rod for a client. It is in pretty bad shape, so I want to remove all the old varnish (without affecting the segment gluing). What's the best way to safely remove it? Will a chemical de-stripper work?

3M makes a safe stripper. Go to your local hardware store. If the varnish is dried and crack up I use a dull knife and scrape the varnish off. Just wear eye protection.

Thanks Dave

I just finished stripping the finish off of 4 bamboo rods. I used 3M " Safest Stripper" and it worked great. No fumes, put on 1 thick coat with a brush, let it set about and hour and then I used a 3M stipping pad and warm water with a little dish soap and the old varnish all came off without having to scrape it.
