Cork cleaning

Left my last grip unfinished, as I'd run out of sealer/finish. Cork was the colour of mangrove mud (I think it had mangrove mud on it too).

Old toothbrush with bristles clipped short, and some shower gel took most of the crap off. Then green scotchbrite and toothpaste, plus a bit of elbow grease. Finally, taped off the seat hoods (to protect cobra graphite finish) and a light once-over with fine grit sandpaper.

Cork is back to new. Will seal, then finish rewrap ( I promise it's the last one ), then post pics.

Ted..

You can also bleach the cork out before you seal it. I have done this on some grips and then seal with Tru-oil.

With the cork already on the rod, try masking off the reel seat, butt cap, and rod with the white Teflon plumber's tape they put on pipe threads. This stuff works really great for what you're about to do.
