milky look under wraps

Just rewrapped an 11' surf due to failed finish. I don't know who built the rod or what materials were used, but it was less than two years old and by appearance not fished much. After just a short use, the new wraps developed a milky look and the guides are coming loose. The finish has has sealed the wraps and cured nicely. Same perfection guides, size D nylon, no underwrap, 2 coats u40 cp, 2 coats aftcote. Any ideas on what could have made these wraps fail for two different builders?

Thanks
Bob

The only time I had this happen to one of my rods was when I didn't bring the epoxy past the thread and onto the blank. Water was able to get inside and cause this look.

Or... finish was applied before the color preserver was completely dry. You may have trapped moisture under the epoxy. Not a good thing.

However, the fact that this has happened for two different guys wrapping the rod independently, makes me wonder if something else isn't going on. Hard to say what it is, but it may be more than a coincidence. I wonder what the owner is doing with this rod - he may be the culprit, as he would seem to be the common denominator in the scenario.

I've had this happen twice for admittly operator errors. I diagnosed it similiar to Mike, but in my case I did not completely fill the tunnel on a couple of guides and water got to the CPed thread. However like Tom I'm puzzled why there would be 2 "operator" type errors in a row.

I've seen it happen on a Avid StCroix factory built rod, the guides and even the butt wrap failed with moisture under them.

Here I go showing my shoddy upkeep side.....
Go surf fishing, finish in a rain shower, put rods in the rod tube --
get home and get distracted and leave the wet rods in the tube for
awhile---- remember them --- drag em out and let them dry
Milky look under all the wraps and rotting thread.
Yep, I sure would go with the ""operator error"" theory.

Bob,

I had this happen to me once.

As Mike, I thought it might be that I had some thread exposed and water was wicking into the thread. However, this wasn't the case.

I couldn't figure it out until someone told me that perhaps I didn't extend my epoxy past where I applied colour preserver. Because it is water soluble, there could be a chance of a very small channel forming next to the blank where water could wick under the epoxy and into the thread.

Perhaps this is the problem with the mikly thread? Since I was told of the problem, I became a lot more careful with my CP application and have never had a problem since.

Cheers
Robin
