So, I was working on rebuilding a PacBay Traditional 2wt today. I had the butt section stripped, scotchbrited down to the natural finish, and the reel seat arbors drying. I moved onto the tip section......ferrule wrap, next guide up.........all is well. Well on the third guide from the bottom of the tip section, I heated it too much, saw some smoke and then snap.................like a twig. Removed the Alconite top, left the remaining 4 single foot wire guides and scrapped the tip. The butt section is going into my scrap blank pile for reamers and such.

So, the moral of the story is........be very careful when you are working with heat on a blank!!!! Just ordered the Forecast 662 blank......I have to replace this one don't I?????

Why were you heating it?

I was heating the wrap which makes slicing it off and unwinding it a breeze. Just a little heat is all it takes, but I guess I got into a big hurry on this one. BTW, I've done this countless times and never ever overheated a blank. Just one of those things that eventually will happen if you work on enough rods.

Lou, what are you using to heat the rod? I've heated many with nothing but a hair dryer and have yet to smoke a blank. It takes very little heat to soften the finish on a wrap.

You might try keeping your off hand a few inches behind or above the wrap while applying the heat. That way, you will burn your hand before you damage a rod.
