I put one together using excel spreadsheet and it ain't perfect but it gets me in the ballpark and then I can tweak it by hand..

I based it on the formula in clemens book, if you're interested i can email it to you, since I don't think we can post that type of thing here.

No formula would be complete without also factoring in attributes of the specific reel being used..most apparent when considering spinning tackle. Spool diameter, height, and angle all impact the critical placement of the first guide . It may or may not be extreme to factor all this stuff-depending on your viewpoint- but, like Tom, I,ve found the New Concept concept seems to pretty much nail it quick n easy. Barry

Barry - I agree, most definitely, that the REEL Spool diameter and height off the blank are essential considerations in designing a guide layout, regardless of the method used for guide selection & placement. And that information about the reel may be specific to that customer's reel, or be based on a range of general & reasonable assumptions for reel sizes.

THANK YOU, Barry, for explicitly including REEL dimensions in the discussion. I thought that I WAS implying the fact that the REEL dimensions ARE involved by referring to the GEOMETRY of the situation. I apologize that my attempts to be comprehensive and careful in my description were not explicit enough on that subject.

Please note that in the 2 citations LINKED in my first Reply above, that I explicitly and literally wrote 10,000 words on this subject of the MATH and GEOMETRY of the Right Triangles and Right Trapezoids formed by the REEL and the GUIDES and the LINE and the ROD BLANK layout. And I literally had 10,000 words from the Gallery thrown right back at me by RBO Commentators (like the Stoning of Stephen). Over 1,000 Views and over 60 Replies were made over these 2 Posts, which mainly discussed the reel and the butt guide and a ratio method for its placement. This is a situation where a DIAGRAM is worth a 1,000 of our WORDS.

Someday I'll learn how to draw diagrams as a Paintbrush *.BITMAP, and use my PaperPort to convert it to a *.JPG, making it more post-able in the PhotoGallery. Meanwhile, I'll just add that to the to-do list, right? -LOL, Cliff Hall+++
