I am looking into the purchase of a moisture meter for woods harvested off our farm as well as some given to me by friends.
I have read where pin type meters don't work well on wood as it is tough to get enough penetration for an accurate reading. I would like to get a moisture meter but am clueless and confused as what type, brand etc to get. I don't want to break the bank, but would like to get something adequate for my needs. I have been cutting some maple, oak and other burls and would really like to get a moisture reading. Thanks, Herb Knowlton Re: Recommendations for moisture meters

Herb;
I well imagine you will get a response with some good information...... BUT maybe that would be a better question for [www.woodnet.net] or ttp://www.woodmagazine.com/wood/dgroups/index.jhtml there may still be some good links here as well [www.sonic.net] David A. Herb,
I have only used industrial grade meters...but have had nothing bad to say about pin meters. Most of the ones I have used are tough enough you can smack em with a mallet and get good penetration. All it is doing is measuring the conductivity between the 2 points ...because wood is an isulator the electrical current has to travel through water...essentially the more water in the wood the more current gets from one pin to the other...you don't need really deep penetration to get a good reading. I have no idea on prices...any I have used were company owned. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
