Many of these metallic paint require a spray laquer type finish to bring up the true colour. Any of you ever tried this as a blank finish for renovation???????? Stan Re: blank finish

Yes I do it often. Find it the easyest way. Some tint a urethain and do it all at once.
here is a link for more infor : [www.rodbuilding.org] I use Plasti-kote [www.plastikote.com] Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/20/2005 01:14PM by bill boettcher. Re: blank finish

Are you talking about a undercoat to show through a candy or a clear overcoat? If a clear overcoat I would not recommend lacquer. It tends to yellow and/or crack with age and isnt very durable. A good urethane (2 part ) clear would work great. IMHO, I own a body shop and have been working with finishes of that type for over 30 years. Hope this helps.

The plasti-kote is a Auto finish in a spray can.
It can also be gotten in can for regular auto spray use. But the clear like said should be either Permagloss-a urethaine or a auto 2 part urethaine Check the link for a lot of info on it. Re: blank finish

Thanks for the input guys. WAs just wondering. Permagloss etc aint available over here due to the flammable nature on air transport. Sea transport takes months. Plasti-kote I can get OK, does that work??
What I am talking about is a rod renovation where years of use has to be rubbed or sanded off a blank prior to re-wrapping. I then am trying to find a reasoably priced finish for the blank as I do`nt have any fancy spraying facilities, only a drying area which I do`nt want to contaminate by spray painting in. Aint got room for an additional spray area so need something simple. Re: blank finish

If you are looking for that Transparent look you will have to tint a clear coat and then apply.
Just to paint a blank the plasti-kote will do it , some have said they do not clear, but a coat or two of something like permagloss or minwax spar urithaine over will help Did you check out the link ? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/20/2005 04:32PM by bill boettcher. Re: blank finish
