ending chevron

First off, this is a great site. Haven't tried to wrap anything fancy yet but wrapped a chevron the other day. It turned out easier than I thought it would and looks good for my first. My question is, How would you normally go about ending it. Should a band be wrapped on each side and then cut the strings off or must it be coated first before being cut. Thanks in advance for all help.

What I do is wrap a small band of thread, usually about 1/2" long. Then I cut the threads and feather them out some so they do not show up under the thread I wrap over them. I just make that first band of thread at a little tighter tension just to make sure threads dont shift on me.

For the sake of safe keeping the threads, I put a coat of color preserver on before I cut any threads. That way if anything goes wrong with your tie off wrap it won't unravel the whole butt wrap on you. And believe me things can happen, I have had my pull through loop break and then you are stuck with a couple hours of work staring at you wondering how do I fix this. Just safer.

I will sometimes put a THIN coat of finish on the wrap first then when it dries, trim the excess thread and wrap a band over the ends. Some put a piece of tape tTIGHTLY over the ends, trim and wrap the band completely covering the tape. This actually makes a nice flat wrap (good Idea, Putter!)

I seen Putter's technique on a DVD he created and gave it a try. It works great.

I use CP almost to the end, let dry, cut the ends at an angle, then I wrap my end rings starting ahead of the wrap and wrap the end wraps toward the chevron. That way I get a real tight wrap and the thread won't slide down the shaved ends.
