I have completed a pratctice wrap (1st ) with Madeira Thread on a dowell rod. Not ever using CP in the past and not wanting to order any yet, I decided to try something out. While I was at Joann Faberics picking up Madeira, polyneon #40, I went through the store and decided to try a varnish that is water based for CP. It is put out by Delta Ceramcoat, exterior/ intereior satin varnish. This stuff is used for crafts after they have been painted. Last night I gave the wrap two coats and tonight I put on one coat of LS Supreme about two hours ago and no "fish eyes". Has anyone had any else tried this stuff? Re: CP Alternate

Jim, I haven't used "Ceramcoat" but I have seen that the water based "Minwax polycryllic" will also work as an alternate CP....does the Ceramcoat have milky white appearance when you apply it? Re: CP Alternate

i have been using olympic interior water based polyurethane gloss finish 42784 as CP. it works very well
under spar varnish but i have not used it with epoxy finishes. it has a white milky appearance when wet but dries clear. i apply three thin coats, let dry over night then apply my varnish. it is worth testing with epoxy to see how it works because it is the best CP i have used with varnish. Jim,
A couple of times I used Gudebrod #840 Rod Finish as CP... Works well, thread gets maybe only a very little bit darker than when using "normal" CP Pavel, Moscow, RU Re: CP Alternate

The only thing I woudl suggest is to put a coat of epoxy over your sample, and stick it into the sun for a couple of weeks. I strongly suspect nothing will happen, but I do know one CP will make teh threads fade very quickly. I think most of these water based Poly's are very much the same product, and they all probably work very nicely.
I've been using a light coat of teh water based Poly after I grind my guide foot, to protect teh bare metal. I used to use CP, but I prefer to use this stuff as I can tell when it dries, adn it has a harder coating which makes it easier to wrap over than 811. Just make sure not to use too much.
