I have come across some reel seats and handles ( grips) together with a cut off blank inside them. Can they be reused? How would you go about removing the old blank that has been cut off from the inside? Is it worth the trouble? I have a bunch of these I picked up at an @#$%&. Mostly Spinning handles.

In my opinion it's hardly worth the time and trouble. You can buy seats and grips of better quality than what you have there for very little money these days. What's your time worth in removing those handles and seats? You're probably looking at handle assemblies that could be replaced for under $7 to $10 each. I can't speak for anyone else, but I wouldn't spend many minutes trying to salvage something that is worth so little to begin with.

Tom's right. I did one for a guy that broke his rod good. The time it took to try and drill out the blank was not worth it - unless it is reamed and then a scrap blank glued into it, then the blank glued onto that ?? Don't know if I would want to trust it on any thing heavy ??

It is possible, but it is often easier, less time consuming and not much difference in price to do it afresh.
I have successfully used a bit of piping approximately the same OD as the inner diameter of the seat, and cut saw teeth into one end. A little longer than the seat works, also half the length of the seat and cut from both ends. Use this like a hole saw to cut out the glued section inside the seat. It helps iif you have some blank sticking out, so you can make a tape arbor to keep your "seat saw" aligned.

I only do this if I really want/need to save the seat, otherwise I make a new assembly.

They are, but not all builders use them. In fact, they are the easiest to cut off. Tape shreds and binds 'cos it's sticky, wood depends on the wood used, cork is easy too. The hardest are those ones where there's a a gap filled with epoxy. Royal pain.

Like I said, if it's a hard to get seat that needs to be replicated, or a really nice skeleton assembly or such that's worth saving, go for it. Cut a little at a time, and go slowly.

used a reamer on one just to see how hard it would be to save the seat (had several old seats off broke rods) after the first one was off the rest went in the trash
the reamer was made out of a graphite blank with the reamer grit apoxied to it the thing got so hot it destroyed my reamer
MY OPINION IT AINT WORTH IT took way to much time
i was told this but had to try for my self boy were they right
buy a new seat only way to go
