I have been using fuji bplt # 20 ring sic tips on the surf rods I build. I can no longer get sic and hardaloy only starts at a # 12 tube in the 20 ring. Aluminum Oxide comes in many more tube sizes. I am leary of the hardness using braided line. Has any one used these tips and are they holding up?
Thanks Lou Re: Rod Tips

ROD TIPS for SURF RODS:
Lou Caruso - What range of RING SIZES (__MM) do you want ? What range of TUBE SIZES (__/64ths) are you trying to cover ? The FUJI BPLT-(Hardloy) or PST-(SIC) or RST(SIC) or UST(SIC) series should have selections which give you what you are looking for. CONTACT Linda at SMRW (RBO Sponsor). They have ring and tube sizes especially for the surf rod builder. See pgs. 24-26 of their SMRW Catalog. Get one if you don't have one - you'll be very glad you did. I'd go more by ring / donut shape and frame strength and the ceramic's resistance to mechanical shock than anything else (after ring & tube size, of course). If the weight does not over(pre-)-load the rod tip, then the sturdier the better, IMO. -LOL, -Cliff Hall, Gainesville, FL-USA+++ SILICON CARBIDE (FUJI's): BPST-20mm-12/64ths ($12) PST-16mm-14/64ths ($11) UST-12mm-18/64ths ($10) BPST-12mm-15/64ths ($6)--PAC-BAY HARDLOY (FUJI’s): BPLT-16mm-14/64ths ($4) BPLT-20mm-18/64ths ($5) HIALOY (PAC-BAY’s): BPHT-16mm-14/64ths ($3) HOLOGRAPHIC Rings (American Tackle): Titanium Nitride Coating over Zirconia Ring, with Titanium-Chrome frames (TiCh). Ken Preston passed on a great tip in our in-depth article on making surf rods. He uses regular double footed casting type guides for his tip-tops on surf rods. You fold the single foot/leg underneath and and leave the double foot/legs on top and wrap it on that way. Very secure and it allows you to fit nearly any size rod blank tip and attach it to the blank very securely.

Thank you both for the responses.
I forgot about Ken's tip on tip's... Will have to try that. I will also be requesting the catalog from Linda. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
