Just wanted to hear what the other rodbuilers/fisherman think. For stand up rods do you like 5' or 5'6"? Does 5' offer that much of an advantage?
What blanks would you reccomend for a 5' stand up rod 50-80 with a unibutt. I have looked at the calstat e-glass and stand up but it seemed if I cut the blanks from the butt to shorten them I would lose too much of the midsection. How do you guys do it with these shorter rods? thank you Re: 5' or 5'6" rod for 50-80class rod

Al,
Doc Ski is the man you need to talk too, my personal preference is 5'6". Doc will be able to tell you anything you would won't to know about Calstar blanks and what idiosyncrasies the blank has after being modified. Doc's email is Docski377@aol.com. Re: 5' or 5'6" rod for 50-80class rod

Al:
Funny you asked the same question I was thinking. I actually want to use a Unibutt, and all the blanks that I want to consider are 5' 6" thus I will need to cut it down. I am worried that if I take from the butt too much, I will push the loading off considerably. Maybe not.. I have used a 5' 9" for my Penn 50 loaded with 80lbs mono for years for tuna and shark. I want to get 5' 6" or shorter for larger fish that I cannot take on these rods. I can get to 5' 6" with a blank thru construction, but I have had problems getting the slick butt out of the holder at strike. Ernie ps. if you get an answer let me know.. You can purchase an Aftco aluminum thru-butt and build it straight through. Unless you need to break the rod down into shorter sections for storage, there is really no need to use a Uni-butt.
