Wrapping a gaff??????

I just set up my rob building bench and wrapper. So I would like to wrap a gaff for starts. Does anyone have any helpful hints for attaching the gaff hook to an old piece of rod? Also, how do you get the 90 point at the top of the hook to go inside the rod blank. I'm assuming that you grind it down and make it fit. Any help would be appreciated.

FYI, I'm using a Mustad 3" gaff hook.

Drill a hole for the hook tang to go into. You might need to grind it down some also to fit in a smaller hole. Mix up some rod bond and place it where the hook shank will go. Wrap electrical tape around the hook and blank in a couple spots to hold the hook in place while it dries. When the rod bond gets to the point that it has started to dry, but is still tacky, wrap it with nylon twine or parachute cord depending on how heavy the gaff is. Let it dry for 24 hours and then use rod finish to level off the twine/parachute cord wrap. It will take a few cotes sometimes to get it level. Wrap the dried level finish with thread color of choice and put on wo more cotes of finish. Let it dry a couple days and you should have a rock solid gaff that will be around for years to come.
