Hi all - Hey Doc
I am considering building a big tuna spinning reel rod that will be used with an Accurate Twin Spin and a Shimano FA20000. The reels will be loaded with 65 LB Spectrae Power Pro and 50 fluroncarbon top shot. I will be using these outfits for up to 60 lb tuna and Wahoo. I know this setup is used out side of the United States and beginning to be used in California. My question to all of you is which blanks would be Great to build this rod on? Parmeteres: 5 1/2 blank 14 reargrip 12 foregrip SIC guides Rods Used for tossing big bombs and big lures to cut down on smaller fish being hooked up 50 lbs line 20 lbs drag Shimano FA20000 and Accurate TWIN SPINNING reel (it wiill be out by the time I take my trip) Also, am not interest in playing with the fish, quick kill is my focus. Too old, too short, too fat, arms too short and out of breath before the fish is normally ready to come on the boat. Big Fish requires big sticks, any recommendations Re: Help- Big Tuna Spinning Rods Blanks Recommendation - Hey Doc and everyone else

Sounds like you already know what you want Nacho. I personally would go with 6 footer or cut a 6 footer back 3". Take a hard look at the GF760H CalStar. Also think Gimbal and check the 14" rear grip. I know your pad and harness set up and I think you might be a tad to long. Also Check With Smitty. I think he has a set up to use on spin rods so you can use the harness straps. Call me if youhave any Questions.
Steven - I hate to tell your this but I have seen dozens of Newell bit the dust on good sized tuna. In fact I have a footage of Carls reals blowing up on him on one of my long range charters. I have seen less carnage with the old Penn 114Hs that have been tricked with side plates. Now a days though(if you have the bucks) get Tiburnon Smart Shifts. 50 lb. line and 20 pounds of drag? With that light of fishing line I'd go for the Calstar 760L and lower the drag. Re: Help- Big Tuna Spinning Rods Blanks Recommendation - Hey Doc and everyone else

Hi Doc,
You know I was going to call you on this special project, I think it will be pretty neat to stress those TUNA COFFER GRINDERS and my body. I can see everyone laughing as I am having a ball. Does Calstar have a 600 M or H, maybe it should be an L. What do you recommed in addition to the 760H, I know they produce a 600 for special order, but I am not sure of the line/fish weight options for the 600 series. I know you have the inside skinny on Calstar. You are correct on the gimbel. Good Idea on the lenght of the reargrip, it may be a little. Can I adjust the Smitty belt to match the longer reargrip, even though I would hate to do because I had Smitty himself fit all of the belts on me. It is perfect on the tuna rods, make me feel like a middle linebacker. FYI - Finished the three Stand up tuna rods, they look good, but I hope they kill big fish even better than they look. ALso, just finishing a GF765M SIC guided rod, too many guides on it, but it looks great.. Will be used with the SST12 with 50 lb test. Hope all is well with you, as always, thanks for all your feedback. Take care, my friend. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
