AA silk vs. sz A nylon for underwrap

I want to do a white underwrap to go beneath sz A nylon thread (the nylon overwrap won't have CP) as I find this makes for a really nice color effect. I did this with white Testors enamel under Gudebrod royal blue nylon thread, and thought the vibrant blue color was striking. However, the paint goes on too thick and uneven, plus its too easy to scrape off while pushing the threads tight together. So, my question is, will I be happier with NCP sz A nylon or AA silk with CP as the white underwrap? Will one be much easier to cover than the other? My thought was the silk would give less bulk, but toss on the CP, and maybe its a wash.
On an unrelated topic, and as someone new to this site, has anyone else found complete happiness putting their rod finish of choice on with a knitting needle as recommended by L.A. Garcia in his basic rodbuilding book? Good control, few if any bubbles. Re: AA silk vs. sz A nylon for underwrap

Go with the NCP white - it'll stay brighter and whiter than the silk thread with CP. You will still want to use CP on the NCP if the blank is a dark one (black, grey, etc.) and if you want the absolute brightest white possible.

Patrick,
One of the things I do when I have a dark rod and light threads is to use a white KILZ spraypaint on the areas where the threads will be. I mask off the area and spray it as lightly as I can. I found that Kilz works better than Testors and does not leave an uneven surface for the thread. Once dry, I have not had any problem with it coming off when I pack the threads. You do have to let it dry for about 24 hours to get it hard enough to work easily. You might try it sometime on a practice piece and see how you like it.
