Just wrapped a some thread on a blank applied CP, U40 type,to the threads. Waited 1 hour and applied Prmagloss. After 24 hours I unwrapped the thread, there wasn't a speck of permagloss on the blank.In my opinion ,no penetration of Permagloss at all.

Exactly, it worked perfectly. The color preserver did its job 100%.

Tom is right it turned out great. The finish, Permagloss, epoxy, or whatever you use is not meant to penetrate or soak through the thread. It is a protective coating for the thread.

The thread hold the guides on the rod and the finish protects the thread.

Right, whether it goes through to the blank or not is of little consequence in terms of wrap strength or longevity.

You do want to make sure that either CP or Permagloss or epoxy fills the thread tunnels between guide leg/foot and blank, This creates a little shoulder or flat area that tends to stabilize the guide and prevents it from rocking or shifting under load.

I'd also carry any finish just past the edges of the wrap to ensure that you seal the thread from water.

That discards my theory about the penetration of Permagloss going thru the threads to create a stronger shoulder, which I was eluding to in the previous post.That blows my "mind".

The color preserver prevents any further penetration through the threads by anything else. That is the job it's supposed to do.

The "shoulder" doesn't need to be strong. It does nothing but ramp up and create a small flat that prevents the guide from shifting or rolling on the round surface. CP will do the job just as well as Permagloss or epoxy. But you do have to fill that tunnel. I usually just put a drop of Permgloss or epoxy on the end of a toothpick and touch it to the tunnel opening. It will seep in there and do what needs to be done.

The first coat or application of anything you put on the threads tends to seal them against further penetration by anything. This is why it's important to introduce a little finish into the actual opening of the tunnel.

Bill - you gotta spend a lot more time reading the archives & using teh search engine, there's tons of info in there.

Try it again but do not use the CP just several coats of permagloss. Leave it overnight.
