Permagloss ??

Had a strnge problem with Permagloss. I was putting the second coat on 2 fly rods, a total of 20 guide wraps. After 24 hours all the wraps had dried hard as rock but one was still tacky, after 48 hours the one wrap was still not hard and I was able to peel it right off with my thumb nail, the first coat still looked ok.
Never had a problem like that and was wondering why just one wrap out of 20 would not cure. All the Permagloss used came out of the same shot glass and was put on with the same brush. Re: Permagloss ??

Hard to say. Put some humidity to it - outside in a humid area of if that's not possible and you have to stay indoors, try some boiling water in a tea-kettle.
Still odd that one out of twenty didn't dry. I wonder, was it the first wrap you coated? The last? Or one in-between? ........... Re: Permagloss ??

Thinking back I think it was the second wrap. I live in a dry climate, high and the humidity was probably about 20% to 30%, it is vey hard to get it much higer than that even with a humidifier going 24 hours a day. Will be adding a second coat to that wrap and a third coat to remaining 19 tomorrow so will see what happens, will also put a prtable humidfier in my rod building room tonight..
What amazed me was how easy that one coat peeled off and the first coat showed no damage. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/18/2005 08:26PM by Bob Crook. Re: Permagloss ??

With humidity that low, you can expect a bit more time required for complete drying.

It is possible that it being only the second wrap that you hit a small pocket in the epoxy that may not have gotten mixed up well. that was used up before you got to the third wrap Re: Permagloss ??

I'm certainly stumped as to why that one didn't dry. But I still tend to suspect the very low humidity played some role there. Why it didn't affect the finish on the rest of the guides, I just don't know.

Tom - in the other PG thread up above, you stated if applied to thickly all the Solvent might not escape. Maybe this was the case on this one guide? Re: Permagloss ??

Could be. Permagloss has a bit of a battle going on all the time. You've got solvent trying to escape and the moisture in the air is trying to cure the stuff at the same time. If one or the other happens too quickly then you've got problems. But generally if there's enough humidity, the stuff is going to dry/cure even if the solvent has not fully escaped. I can't say what happened, but I still suspect that the very low humidity has something to do with it.

Thanks to all. I think that the problem could have been that it was put on to thick on that one guide. Have used a lot of Permagloss for guide wraps and the humidity has been in the same range, 30% +/-, and this is a first. One plus is that it peeled off with no problem and has been re-coated and turned out fine.
Just have to be more carefull with the thickness from now on. Re: Permagloss ??

I bet it peeled off becasue the Solvent prevented it from sticking. After you peeled it off, did it happen to get hard...uh, I mean cure better? lol. Re: Permagloss ??

Billy,
Checked some of the pieces that I peeled of that were still on th bench and they are not all that hard, they bend not break and can be scratched with a finger nail.... Only the phantom knows what went wrong Re: Permagloss ??

Sounds like an old school Ralph O'Quinn Witch hunt. lol. I remember those days from teh old Guild board when he'd flip his lid when guys used Aluminum foil ash cans with creased edges tomix their epoxy. lol. Funny stuff. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
