I'm rewrapping the guides on an old South Bend fly rod. The reel seat looks like it may be Bakelite or some kind of plastic. Does anyone know what this may be?
Also, the grip looks nasty. Like it was painted brown or there's a real thick coating of grime on it. Can cork age like tthis or was something painted onto it? Thanks Re: old bamboo fly rod reelseat

The old rods had pyralin as a reel seat, in many colors, I don't beleive that South Bend used Bakelite as a reel seat. Regards to the grip, try some rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball, be generous with the alcohol.... that should break up some of the garbage.. then switch to an old toothbrush and good old soap and water... should clean up to near new.
Have fun, any questions, you can email me directly at : mrparramoure@yahoo.com Art Re: old bamboo fly rod reelseat

Careful with the alcohol. I tried it on an old cane rod and it desolved much of the cork with the grime! Golden witch (the cane restoration experts) recommends ivory soap and a mushroom brush. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
