I have a rod built with a water slide decal from Decal Connection and it was put on crooked. I want to take off the decal and reapply Flex Coat. A person who makes rods suggested I dab the decal with acetone and then rub it off with my fingermail.
I'd like to take off the decal, clear the area around where I apply a new one and then paint on Flex Coat to even out the finish. Can someone recommend the best way to do this? Thanks. Re: Removing Waterslide Decal

Decal Connection - Micro Sol - repeat coats until decal dissolved - this will only work if you have not applied a coat of finish over top of decal. If you have finished just wrap over with A thread and start all over. Re: Removing Waterslide Decal

Bill has good advice.
If finish has been put over it, it's pretty touchy trying to remove the finish and the decal without doing a bit of (at a minimum, perceptual) damage. Wrapping with 'A' thread sounds like a good solution. I have carefully sanded a bit at a time and got it that way, too -but it's slow and tedious to get good results. Whichever way you go, enjoy doing it and learning from it! Putter Williston, ND Re: Removing Waterslide Decal

I am committed to removing this decal and not adding more thread. The whole situation is complicated by the fact the decal was applied to the bare balnk and not a coat of epoxy as recommended by the decal maker. There is a coat of Flexcoat over the decal. Any other suggestions? (I promise to share the technique used and the [hopefully successful] results).
Thanks! Re: Removing Waterslide Decal

Just very, very careful sanding/steel wool until down to the decal. I'd use gray Scotchbrite from there on until its removed. Of course, one area will sand at a faster rate than an adjacent area, so sand a bit and look it over closely, then carefully sand some more. I don't think Scotchbrite would ever harm a blank unless a guy worked on it for an hour in one spot LOL! Putter Williston, ND Re: Removing Waterslide Decal

Putter -
What solvents are you comfortable with in this operation? Thanks, Tony Re: Removing Waterslide Decal

Used diligently, there's no problems with acetone. Wiping with acetone won't cause any problems. Soaking the rod in it is a different deal altogether. Putter Williston, ND Re: Removing Waterslide Decal

And if I augment with a little sanding / scraping, would Scotchbrite be too course? Could I use 400 or 600 wet sanding paper without scraping color off the blank? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
