Hi all,
I had a great experience yesterday giving some one on one instruction to another up and coming rod builder who lives not far from me. I knew it would be nice to meet someone who is trying to learn the rod building craft ( dispite the high probability of addiction ) and show them some of the tricks that have worked for me but I really did not realize just how rewarding the experience would be for me. I had a wonderful time and I think I may have gotten more from the experience than the person I was teaching. Answering questions and sharing ideas with other like minded people on this board is very rewarding also but the face to face and hands on experience, at least for me was very profound! The satisfaction of watching someone complete a task that has previously given them trouble is an awesome feeling. (great for the ego!) Of course, teaching is not for everyone but I strongly suggest anyone who has thought about doing it to stop thinking and give it a try! My experience has inspired me to see if I can start a beginning to intermediate rod building class at a local boys club, tackle shop, Boy Scout camp or something like that and if anyone else has done this and can offer any suggestions on the best way to get it started or has any Do's and Dont's I would vey much apprieciate an email or phone call please. Ray,
I have done a lot of teaching rodbuilding to kids. First to High School kids, then to Scouts and now with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. I sent you an e-mail if you would like to "Pick my brain". I admire your interest in teaching kids to build rods. You are right about enjoying the teaching as much as the kids enjoy building. It just makes you feel good inside. Good Luck, Ron Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
