I'm getting ready to strip a fly rod and replace its guides and tip top. I'm going to use a hairdryer to warm them up before removing them. Would I ruin the blank if I overheat it? If so, how can I make sure I won't overheat it? Re: stripping a rod

Hi Eijiro,
IMO I believe it would be pretty hard to over-heat the blank with a hair dryer. Be very very careful if you use anything else like an alcohol lamp, propane torch, or cigarette lighter. Look into the FAQ & Library sections of this board for some quick suggestions on this subject. Most of the old epoxy should come off with your finger nail if not try, a plastic scrapper or dish scrubber ( not the brillow type). Good Luck on the re-build! I usually do them cold and cut over the guide foot. Be careful of the blank you don't cut into it. Take your time. After I peal the guides off your finger nail will take most of the rest off and the use of a hair dryer will help with the rest.
The tip top I use a Candle. I hold the guide with a plier and the blank with my other hand, hold it over the candle till it comes off - try not to over heat. A little at a time. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
