Can butt end act as female ferrule end?

OK, quick question for you pros.
Have a blank that I want to add an extension. Can I just treat the butt end opening as the female end of a ferrule opening and just find another piece of the right diameter and taper and simply insert it to the butt end. Of course, I'll wrap the butt end like any ferrule to strengthen it. So, for example, lets say I have a 5 1/2 foot long blank. I make the reel seat right at the butt end. Then add another piece at the end of the 5 1/2 foot to make a 'fighting' butt. OR would the butt end end not be strong enough unless designed specifically as a ferrule? Thanks, Mo Re: Can butt end act as female ferrule end?

should not be a problem at all. Butt section is usally the strongest part of rod any way Re: Can butt end act as female ferrule end?

Most ferrules are internally reinforced. Most butt openings are not. Extensions are generally best done with oversleeves, rather than inner sleeves (RodMaker volume 6 #3).
If you keep the extension short, and add some external reinforcement, however, you should be okay. ............. Re: Can butt end act as female ferrule end?

I've done extensions similar to that, only the entire handle assembly is on the extension, and the rod can be broken down. I agree thatthe oversleeve is your best bet. For a permanent join, just glue everything up with Rod bond. I would suggest you build on the extension, then put your reel seat over it. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
