I'm going to be building a 12 wt rod with a fight grip. How far above the regular grip should it be placed? Should I fill in between the two with thread and or a hookeeper? I'm sure it's not too complicated, just looking for input and ideas. Re: fly fight grip

I wouldn't put it up above the regular grip - that encourages the fisherman to grasp the rod too high, often resulting in breakage. Instead, make a 4 inch or so cigar type fighting grip right onto the front of the regular wells grip. That will give him a little extra leverage, without going so high as to endanger the rod.
If you do decide to go up above the grip, I wouldn't push much than about 3 to 5 inches above the regular grip. You don't want the load or force to fall on the mid-section. The rod butt was designed to carry those type loads so you don't want the fisherman to grasp the rod too high, bypassing the strongest area of the rod and putting the load onto the weaker mid-section. ............. Thanks Tom, that was my main concern, putting it up too high. Re: fly fight grip

You can also help the angler out by building him a shorter rod. I would never build anything above a 10 weight in a length of more than 8 and half feet.

He wants a pac bay blank. They only come in 9' length. Can you cut 6" off the butt. Do I dare do that? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
