Multi piece rods

A five piece rod that I built with a popular inexpensive blank constantly comes apart while casting regardless of how tight I connect the sections. Even waxed and twisted together so hard that it's difficult to pull apart, after an hour of fishing, apart it comes. Not always the same section either. Usually it's the tip but it seems if I'm casting further (harder?) the lower sections loosen too. I contacted the manufacturer and he says it's a common problem of all multipiece blanks. I don't buy it. I have rods 2,3,4,5, and 7 pieces and rarely have any of them have come apart.
I built the rod for me and aside from the dissconnections, I love the rod. I'm amazed how well it casts for a $30 blank. I'm just leary about building one for someone else if this not just one bad apple. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks, Tony Re: Multi piece rods

Sad to say, but the one bad area with some inexpensive blanks is the ferrule fit. In that regard, you still tend to get what you pay for. Now, they're not all bad, but I've seen many of them behave just like you mention and they're nearly always in the lower priced blanks.

The funny thing is that the ferrules seem to fit good. There isn't any clicking when I waggle the rod and thats something that I've found on even some of the more expensive blanks. I'm not complaining about the rod or blank. I hope it's just this one. I just don't want to sell these and have them come back to me. If no one else is having this problem I'll assume it's just a lemon. I wonder if there is a way to test the blank before putting it all together.

One thing that may help is to coat each mail section with a thin coat of permagloss and hang them so the mail end is facing down.
Let dry at least overnight to make sure it is hard This may take any gap out of the ends. Re: Multi piece rods

Something that might help, is to coat them with U-40 Ferrule Lube. Not only does it help get the ferrules apart, it helps keep them together when you want them together.
I don't know of any test for ferrules before you build the rod. It's the combined action of casting with the completed rod and line that tends to dis-joint the ferrules. I'm not sure how you would replicate that in a naked blank. ............ Re: Multi piece rods

A knocking or rocking (clicking) is not always detectable. Also you sometimes find that the fit at the tip and rear of the male ferrule may be fine but the section in between may not.
