My father has a fly rod that has a very thin finish on the wraps almost like there is no coating. "What does one use to get this finish? Is it more difficult than flex coat high build? Thanks for the help.

Spar varnish or Permagloss will get you that type of look though it may take a couple of coats to give you some protection as well as a very thin look.

Is permagloss the same as duragloss? Is spar varnish something one can buy at a paint store or is something only for rod building? Thanks.

Duragloss is a two part epoxy, permaglos is a one part (urethane?). Spar varnish is everywhere, Sears and Wal-mart both carry it.

Is one easier than the other? Are they any easier to work with than high build flex coat?

Permaglos dries extremley fast and can be a bit tricky to work with because of drying time, but goes on very thin and needs a few to several coats. Spar is thin as well, but takes longer to dry, I've not tried it myself yet except in a spray can to coat a whole blank, which came out well.

Duragloss LS Supreme is a thicker 2 part epoxy, still fairly thin unless you get the high build, but much thicker than the above two items and may be too thick for what you want.

What finish are you using now? if you are using Flex Coat or any of the other finishes other than a U40 product. This well work even with a high build. You can use heat on the finish, the rod must be rotating. Use a thin application . now as the rod rotates apply heat you well see a glob of finish appear at the bottom of the wrap . wick that finish off. Practice on a old peace first. To much heat well crystalize your finish. I use a butane torch with a blue flame approximately 6 to 8 inches from the rod, you must keep the flame moving and not stay on the finish more than 2 seconds keep sweeping accross the finish until a glob appears, stop heating and wick off the excess . If you heat a U40 product you well get a poor finish
