Just curious as to people's impressions of these guides (not RECOIL but the TiCarbide plated snakes). Looking for guides for the next project but am not sure they're worth the extra money. Line speed? Durability? Do most poeple seem to be moving towards single foot guides with ceramic inserts? Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks. Re: Titanium Carbide Snake Guides

I'm leary of anything plated that works by friction. It seems to me that eventually, especially if you fish with dirty lines once in a while, you'll wear through plating. Your fly line becomes a sort of rattail file against the guides. I'm pretty careful with my lines and I once wore out a good set of TiN plated guides in one season, which made my mind up. I've never worn out RECoils nor have I worn out my ceramics, so that's what I build on and that's what I sell. However, TiCH plated snakes DO cast nicely. Much nicer than RECoils I have to say. But it's superior longevity that I try to sell to my customers. You can still fling great lengths of line with RECoils. Josh Markvan www.markvanheirloom.com Re: Titanium Carbide Snake Guides

I wore through a set in a single winter/spring season in Minnesota on a 3 weight. As you can guess, iced up lines make for a lot of friction, but it seemed to be an absurdely short time. Scott Kinney The Longest Cast Fly Rods [www.thelongestcast.com] Re: Titanium Carbide Snake Guides

What do you guys suggest as an alternative? The rod is a DC 5wt. What about Fuji single foot SiC rings? To heavy for this application?

No I don't think the Fuji single foot guides will be too heavey at all for your 5 wt. If you can go to the T-SG which have a titanium frame then you are into seriously light weight guides. For a 5 wt I would probably have a size 7 as my smallest running guide. Better in my view to have good line flow rather than get too hung up on weight reduction and having your fly line getting sticky in the guides.
