Wright McGill Trail Master

I have a guy who wants me to build him a Trail Master to replace one that he lost. I'm wondering if there are handles out there like the original. It's a combo spin fly rod. It looks like the handle is removable and you just turn it around to switch from one to the other. Is there anything like that out there? Also what would be a good blank to use. It would be a 4 piece 7'6" rod. Any suggestions would be helpful.

i think you are going to have to fabricate a handle like that. should not be that difficult. study it carefully and make sure you can gather all the materials before you take the handle apart. i imagine it involves some metal ferrules and an internal shaft that everything is mounted on. a trailmaster with modern materials would make an interesting project. you could use a glass blank starting with a one piece and cut it and convert to four piece or you could use graphite in which case there are a million choices of four piece blanks. let us know how this works out. just some thoughts on the subject.

Steve,

I am working on a spin/fly combo that i am using one of Dan Crafts 9', 3 weight, 5 piece blanks. If you drop the butt section it measures about 86.5". it is in his Sig III line which i think he currently has on sale. hope this helps.

I just receintly restored one for my dad. I was lucky, the rod was still in one peice. They are nice rods once resotred to like new condition. I used brown size D thread and U 40 permagloss with no color preserver. I also managed to keep the white tape on the butt section in tact also. Good luck.
