finishing a matte rod blank

I'm about to build a Rainshadow SW1387 blank, which has a matte finish. I want to Permagloss it, and was curious about whether to do that before any assembly, or afterwards. I reasoned that if I do it before, it should make it easier to slide the eva grips down the blank, but I want to be sure the cleanup of the Rod Bond wouldn't affect the Permagloss finish. I would also feel more comfortable using a china marker over a gloss finish rather than the matte finish. Anyone have any experience one way or the other? Re: finishing a matte rod blank

I've always done it before. The dried Permagloss will be unaffected by Rod Bond or clean up with rubbing alcohol in my experience doing this both using Permagloss as a clear coating and using pigments mixed into it for a colored blank. Putter Williston, ND Re: finishing a matte rod blank

Rich--I'd definitely do it before simply because I think you'll get much nicer results...and as Putter advises it won't be an issue re. cleanup. I'm not sure about your china marker concern--I've simply never had a prob with using one on ANY finish! Re: finishing a matte rod blank

There's nothing like the voice of experience. Thanks Putter and John for your responses. I'll Permagloss first.
