I am re-doing a SCV 6' spin rod. I did a couple rods this winter using Gudebrod Goldenrod and had a lot of trouble with the wraps fading dark. When they did come out right they were wonderful. My SCV rod had dark wraps ( I built ) but never did like. Stripped my old guides off; cleaned up the rod; did a Concept guide spacing this time with new All American Titan guides. Took all the hints that have recently come up on CP and Goldenrod. I packed my wraps as tight as I could get them. I made sure my hands were very clean. I vacuumed my work bench area. I got a new bottle of Gudebrod 811 CP. Just put on my first coat of CP. Was 70 degrees and dry in my work room. Over half the wraps darkened on me. And I have a very nice feather inlay that I laid out over a Black thread wrap with a little Goldenrod band at both ends. The feather inlay is coming out great. The only option I have not tried is to do double wraps; making sure the under wrap for the Goldenrod is light. The thought of double wraps on a light spin rod does not thrill me . Will doube wraps with size A thread change the action very much or will it be so insignificant that I shouldn't worry about it? I'm going to get this Goldenrod battle figured out come hook or crook. I have had the same problem with goldenrod regular thread. No matter what color presorver I use, it always comes out very dark or blotchy. I now use the NCP for that color.

You might try masking off the area of the wrap and painting the blank with a color very close to the goldenrod or even lighter; I think that may work for you. If the color was a match or a metallic (very close in color), you wouldn't even need CP. Might like the look of the metallic under it without CP, too!

I usually paint the blank under a light wrap white. Quick, easy, and works great

Another vote for painting the blank on lighter rods.
