Having trouble getting
good results using ink and pen, would a ultra fine point permanent sharpie work?

Maybe. If you can get the color you want, and if you can apply something over it to keep it from smearing when you hit it with finish. I think I'd test it on some scrap blank pieces. For a sealer, you might look at something like Krylon matte sealer or Artists Clear Acrylic.

I do think you may find that even the finest tipped Sharpie is going to be a bit more cumbersome and thick than most of the pen writing tips.

It'll work just fine. If you use acetone at all in your finish, you definitely want to cover your writing with some clear (not the opaque stuff) tape and trim the edges with a new razor blade. Otherwise you can apply finish directly on it. The "ultra fine" Sharpie writes very well and comes in a variety of colors. I've used this for years with good, clean results.

I've used a silver colored Sharpie in the rare case that I write on the blank and have had no problems with it. I see they are finally offering the silver in a fine point (or at least I've finally found one in fine point) and that should work better than what I've used. I cover the writing with a coat of color preserver, too.

Before rushing out for a Sharpie, do a search here on the board. There are several markers that individuals have had success with and you'll learn not just which markers work, but the techniques that have been written about.

I tried a silver sharpie on a scrap blank. I wiped it off with alcohol immediately but it still left the writing embedded in the blank finish. I won't use it on a good blank as I frequently wipe off and redo inscriptions.

If you use a MODERATE amount of acetone, it'll remove the writing completely. Put a dab of acetone on a paper towel and then bring another area of the towel over to that spot and get it LIGHTLY wetted with acetone. Use this area to wipe off the bum inscription. It won't damage anything if done judiciiously in this manner.
