blank painting

I'm toying with the idea of building a rainshadow blank, which has a matte grey finish. What I'd like to do is spray a light mist of metallic paint onto the blank with my air brush. Createx makes some gorgeous pearlescent metallic colors in their acrylic line of paints. If I cover it over with a coat of Permagloss, will the paint compromise the adhesion of the permagloss to the blank? I'm not looking to actually paint the blank another color, just lightly highlight the existing color. Re: blank painting

Well, the paint will adhere to the blank and the Permagloss will adhere to the paint. So the total bond is dependent on how well the paint wets and adheres to the blank surface. I think you'll be okay but you may want to test this on a scrap piece of rod blank.
I have tinted Permagloss with Createx paint pigment and done the whole job in one step. The results were really pretty decent. Just another idea to try. (Have no idea how well Permagloss could be sprayed in an air gun, however. I still "wipe" mine on.) ....... Re: blank painting

How much permaglos to how much Createx for wiping it on? Do you still use the spone brush trick?
I've been wanting to make the wife a purple rod, haven't found the right color in Plasti-cote, not wanting to buy a compressor just yet, so this could work out well. Phil Re: blank painting

Hi, response for Phil about purple color. I decided to give Plasti-Kote a try, the Blue Anodize it Color goes from medium blue to dark blue to a really nice purple sprayed over a scuffed up gloss matte Grey blank, really something you have to see. I just tried it on the end of a blank where the handle would be to test it, look great and covered it with Minwax Spar Varnish. After a few days for the Varnish to dry really well, it seems like the paint would hold up really well. Just have to figure out a color for handle and trim wraps and do want to paint the blank in the Blue Anodize-It color. Just a thought about Purple. Have a great day, Rich.
