I've decided I want to get into rod building and ultimately build a Sage TXL 3 weight. Before I do, I would like to get a rather inexpensive rod to make the majority of mistakes on and learn from and, therefore, really am looking for relatively modestly priced components. I'm thinking of giving this first practice rod to my grand-daughter when she turns 5 to get her into fly fishing with "grampy".
With this in mind, can anyone recommend blank brands reasonably priced that will accomplish my desires? I'm NOT looking for "cheap" on this first rod, just a good blank with decent medium to medium fast action at a fair price that will serve as a learning tool for me and eventually my grand-daughter. From what I've read, people seem to steer others away from "kits", thus, the request for suggestions. Thanks! Re: Your Suggestions and Opinions Welcome

Ralph,
I'd recommend the Dan Craft Sig III blanks, your only problem is that you may not want the give it to the kid. If you do, these blanks are good enough for her to pass on the her kids. They're sweet blanks she'll keep fishing. I wouldn't pass up a kit from Dan, he's someone you'll want to keep doing business with. I've always felt I got the best end of the deal doing business with Dan. Custom Tackle, Rodbuilder Supplies, Bingham's, Utmost, Schneider's and Angler's Workshop are also people to do business with. Ralph, if want somthing to practice on that will still be a VERY functional rod , try Hook & Hackle's IM6 kits . The 7'9" 3wt is on sale for right around $52 , add on shipping you are into it for less than $60. From your discription of what you are looking for , these will be just right . I have built a ton of these kits , and I have a couple that I still use myself . Have fun . JHD Got Fish ? Re: Your Suggestions and Opinions Welcome

I like the Hook & Hackle IM6 blanks. they are good medium quality blanks that are nice to fish. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
