how do you keep the wraps packed when that thing changes shape from wide to narrow? That was the problem I encountered, I would suddenly get gaps in the wrap. I understand what you'e saying on a theoretical basis, but from a practical standpoint it seems impossible.

I use a Forhan wrap with Amtak fly guides with no problem. I can't picture what you are describing. I don't see what would cause a problem.

Gerry, sometimes a get a thread gap at that spot and that is no big deal to me. The wrap is strong and functional and doing what it's supposed to do. It's barely noticeable when it happens anyway.

What about torque on the forward cast. Lots of pressure on a long, slender rod. The higher you go with a guide, the more effect of side pressure one way or the other.

I'm not a tournament caster but I can cast 50-70 feet using spinning guides on a 9' fly rod with little effort.

Gerry, I do keep the guide foot thin when preparing it; from the top of the blank to the top of the guide foot. I probably wrap with more tension than most do, too. I don't have this trouble at all. The thread doesn't split apart on me as I wrap on these guides. It stays put??
