Amtack Classic Coat question
Posted by: Phil Richmond (---.tampabay.res.rr.com)

My LS Supreme and LS High build have run out. In the middle of a rod... local tackle shop only carries American Tackle's Classic Coat High Build. How do they compare? Its not cheap, so don't want to just buy it to try it out without a bit of insight first.

Thanks...
Phil

All epoxy finishes are at least similar, but they also differ in appearance and use. The Amtak stuff is good epoxy finish. It sets a little faster than either of the LS types and handles more like Flex Coat. On lighter thread, you can expect it to darken a little more than the others, but unless we're talking very light colored threads or blank, I doubt you'll notice it. You may find that you really like it.

I think Tom means Amtek Clear Coat, there is a Classic Coat which I have used and it was very long in set time. Nice stuff but to long to set up.

Yes, I was talking about the American Tackle epoxy finish.

I have very limited knowledge of the Classic Coat - have used it exactly once. For what it's worth, I found it similar to Flexcoat, but it seems easier to use and the finish is fantastic - very clear. It leveled very nicely. It does take a bit longer to set, but that is not a concern to me. I guess if you have a rodbuilding business that would be an important consideration. Have not used the Trondak finishes, so I cannot compare.

The stuff at the store was definitely American Tackle and definitely High Build.... may have mistaken Classic instead of Clear though.

Was seriously thinking about trying it, but one of the next rods I'll be working on is going to have white underwraps, so will make a call to Mudhole and order some more Supreme. Thanks for the inputs!
