Wrapped a St Croix SC111 with Gudebrod "Golden Rod Yellow" size A. A 5'6" spin rod. Using the Amer. Tackle Titans for the first time. Took me about 2 hours to wrap it. This rod is for me and I wanted a Iowa Hawkeye look. Plan on using some Black/Gold trim wrap. I put one coat of Flex Coat CP on the under wrap. It faded the bright Golden Rod . Turned kind of a yellow gray. I let it dry and put a second coat of CP on, hoping this might brighten it back up. Didn't work! It didn't get any better. This happened a couple months ago, with the water based CP, on another rod I was doing. I thought it might have been due to the cold temperature in my basement shop. Anyway, I just carefully removed the wraps and plan on starting all over. I am going to throw out the CP. I think there is something wrong with my bottle. It was new in the fall. Has anyone else had this problem? I plan on using some Gudebrod CP. It is not a water base. And I will try it on one "practice" wrap before I do the whole rod. Live and learn. Thanks

Hello Steve
The problem is most likely in the age of the cp, ie how much time setting on the shelf. Most water based mixtures separate and settle. It is sometimes almost impossible to remix them properly. Having said that please check with Flex Coat by using their contact information on the left of this forum page. They will help you find an the answer. Most water based color locks work best using two coats.
Your idea to use a practice wrap is a very good approach to eliminating all surprises no matter what a person is trying for the first.
Sounds like your going to have a beautiful rod.

Easiest way to get the color you're looking for is to use that Gold as an underwrap & put the Yellow Nylon over with no CP. Easy for me to say, as I build SW rods.

I used the same color thread on my first two rods, both blanks were black. I used gudebrod cp and didn't have any problems with color change. Make sure your thread wraps have absolutely zero gaps, because the dark blank really shows through.

Some even paint a dark blank white where they are going to use a very light thread.
