The last time I casted a rod that big for an hour it was worth a week's worth of sore back! I'd encourage him to look at something smaller unless there's an application that absolutely necessitates a 14 foot rod. Re: Question on surf blank

William
I think he is thinking about casting distance. I will mention that to him. Maybe I can talk him into a 10 fotter ? He is looking at this blank on @#$%&. Seems to be at the high end of it's price ?Can not find a lot on the company, only it is in the UK. Re: Question on surf blank

Longer rods can get you more distance but only up to a point. If he is unable to move that 14 footer as easily or as quickly as he can a 12 footer, then it may not net him any more distance. In fact, he could wind up getting less distance.

Who makes a nice surfe blank. The one hes looking at is going for 400.00. Looking at St Croix's surf and a 10-12 footer is about 2-250.00. He's got a G Loomis for his son. Nice blanks. Re: Question on surf blank

If he's looking for a blank to use on the Sportcast circuit then only casting it will answer his questions. Century makes some nice rod blanks, some models favored by long distance casting competitors. There is no magic bullet out there, a blank that works for one person may not work for another.
I like the way many overseas blank manufacturer make their ferrules - fiberglass or graphite reinforced, no need for addtional thread. Conoflex, Century, Zipplex are but a few that do this. Lou Re: Question on surf blank

A lot depends on how much weight he will be throwing. But, as an example, surf fishermen at the Outer Banks tend to use 11 and 12 foot rods when they are going for max distance, they may throw up to 8 ounces but more commonly 4-6 oz when distance is the goal. They will tell you that using a rod longer than 12 feet doesn't pay off, because most guys can't handle it. Re: Question on surf blank
