I am redoing a white Seeker fiber glass trooling rod that really was done in due to wear. The original white paint on the blank was chipped and heavily pocked. I have stripped the thread, cleaned and lightly sanded the blank. The original guide areas were masked off and the exposed portions, between the guides, was painted with Krylon Fusion red paint. A black nylon thread underwrap was done to cover the guide areas. I am now waiting out the seven days to allow the Krylon to cure before applying finish.
There are red painted spaces between the underwraps that vary in length from 4 to six inches where the blank is now red. What brand of finish would be best to take the required flexing with minimum cracking. Does the thickness of a layer of finish have much control over the tendency to crack. When stripping this rod I noticed that the heavy heavy finish between the roller guide frames feet still maintained some pliability even though the rod was several years old. I think Permagloss may eat up that Krylon paint. It may be best to use a couple coats of spar urethane. Some people use thread finishing epoxy, but I'm not sure that's the best choice. Try the spar & see what your results are. It 'might' would have been easier if you had painted & finished the entire blank instead of masking off where the guides go, but I'm sure you'll get good results. Best of luck.
PS. In the future if you'd like to use Permagloss as a top coat, try using PlastiCoat or DupliColor paints. The Permagloss will not destroy those. Jay Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
