underwrap/ overwrap different size threads and marbleizing

I'm rebuilding a 12' surf rod for a friend of a friend. He provided the thread he wanted, E white for the base wrap and blue A for the guide wrap. I'm having trouble getting the guide wrap to wrap around correctly. Am I right in thinking I need to coat the under wrap before I guide wrap?

I am also going to marble a section between the split grips. I want to put on a coat first colored black (to hide the gold paint underneath) How much pigment do I need to add (basically how much is too much?)

and 1 other, how long does CP need to dry before I can put on Flex Coat light?

TIA
Jason

1st) It does indeed help to coat the underwraps first.

2nd) You can add pigment (black) and apply prior to doing the marbleizing to cover the area or you could paint the area black and apply your finish clear prior to marbleizing, or you could cover the area with black thread. Have done it all three ways and prefere to paint or wrap the area first. As far as how much is enough, that's something you will have to pretty much figure out on your own.

3) Have covered CP (flexcoat) is as little as 2hrs. with no ill effects.

Don't use E size thread for the underwraps - that's totally uncalled for. Put down a base layer of A, and then overwrap in either A or D. If you coat the underwrap first, it will make the overwrapping much easier.

Thanks guys, Usually I use A thread for every thing, He had just happened to buy his own thread I did not bother to look at the size until I was having problems with the guide wraps (won't do that again).

Also thanks to those who resopnded to my post by email.

A quick way to test the amount of pigment in your epoxy is to put a drop on some aluminum foil. I can mix some up & it looks fine in the cup, but drop it on the foil & I see right through it. To cover the color on the blank you're talking about you'll want the epoxy to be fairly opaque. Mix in your black and put a drop on the foil. If you can see through to the aluminum, add another drop or two of pigment. Mix & retest. This seems to work for me. I try to add just enough pigment to be opaque and stop there. Haven't had a problem with the epoxy set-up time yet.
