I wish to purchase a rod dryer but find models with speeds from 4 to 16 rpm. Am currently leaning toward the pac bay (single) drying motor with stand at 11 rpm. What is the preferred speed for one of these units to acheive the best finish?

You're going to hear everything from 2 RPM to 200 RPM on this one; it's really a matter of personal preference.

I use the 2 RPM. It's slow enough that I can put finish on as the rod is turning. I can also marble while the rod is turning on this.

Others put finish on by hand, remove the excess that they've put on (??), then put it in the dryer and use various RPM machines. I still like the slower RPM ones for getting a smooth finish and good penetration around the threads down to the blank.

PacBay is a great dryer. What I like about it is this. You can stop the moters direction by just temparily stopping the turning chuck with your hand and it well reverse direction. To me it gives the finish a more even flow.

I have two dryers, one is 6 rpm and the other about 30 rpm. I use the 30 rpm most of the time and whenever I use the slow one, I ahve to check it several times to see that it's actually turning, just seems really slow in comparison. Both speeds seem to work just fine.

I currently use a 4 rpm motor. But I am going to be using 2 different speeds here soon. I will stick to my slow rpm for letting the rod finish turning. I will be going to a faster rpm for applying the epoxy. For getting the epoxy on and spread out on the guides and butt wraps, I like the faster rpm for that. Then after it is applied, I will put the rod on the slower rpm motor to finish. Also for the slower rpm motor, going to set up a drum type dryer so I can dry multiple rods at one time.
