I'm getting ready to try turning a hardwood insert for my next grip, but was wondering how you ream out the grip to fit the blank? Is it tapered, stepped, etc? And how many blanks can I expect to crush before I get it down?
Thanks, Wayne Chubb Re: Hardwood grips

Wayne,
I drill a hole size just larger than the butt diameter of the blank. Then taper the masking tape to fit the taper of the blank. Take your time and have fun! Russ Re: Hardwood grips

Well, you shouldn't crush any blanks. Make sure the wood is properly bore/reamed to fit the desired location on the blank. Unlike EVA or even cork, wood isn't going to stretch to fit the blank so you need to make sure it fits properly.
Your best best is to bore the wood so that it fits the forward area on the blank where you want it to reside. Then taper ream until you get an easy slip fit. Be careful when checking the fit - any abrasive trapped or left in the bore can badly scratch the rod blank exactly where you don't want it to. ............... Re: Hardwood grips

I drill a hole that is no larger than the blank at the the forward end of the grip and then ream the grip to fit as Tom advises. I usually can ream very close to the final size using a proper size rat tail file chucked in a variable speed drill. This method of reaming works best with the drill turning in reverse, (counter clockwise). If the file does not complete the taper as necessary I finish with a tapered reamer built from a piece of scrap blank wound with a narrow belt of sandpaper. I find most of the reamers built with grit are too aggressive to use on a wooden grip for my liking. Apply a bit of time and patience on your first attempt and you'll crush no blanks. I use Stan's technique exactly, a and so far no crushed blanks. You would really need to be applying some unnecessary force to crush the blank, it should slide to position relatively easily once properly reamed.
