Rod refurbishing question???

I have a customers rod here that they want refurbished. They want to keep the rods "specs" on the rod. I know I can get a decal made with all the numbers on it but wanted to explore my options here. The current finish over the "specs" and butt wrap is kind of rough looking, like its scuffed up I guess. So can I put a new coat of finish over this and have it look good or will it look scuffed under a new coat?
Thanks in advance. Noel Re: Rod refurbishing question???

Noel,
I've sanded old finishes enough to remove any of the bad spots and refinihsed with good results. You can try it. If you don't like the way it comes out, then do it from scratch. Regards......Doug@ TCRds Re: Rod refurbishing question???

If you have the blank stripped you can easily try Tom Kirkmans' process of simply wiping on a finish with a foam pad with a hole in it. I did two old old Wright and McGills casting rods last week with the exterior spar varnish and the pad and it worked like a charm. Really easy. Just one quick wipe with the clear finish and it is done. You need to do a little thinking about hanging it vertically to let it dry if you are using the Spar Varnish from the hardware store. It takes a couple of days to dry hard enough to wrap with thread. I have not tried the Permagloss because I did not have any but it is probably a little better if you have some or the time to get it.
